Garrett Beisel (Bachelor of Science in Biology & Chemistry)
I, along with a wonderful team of fellow teachers, had the opportunity to plan and implement a community action project. Graeme, Katie, Bryce, Amelia, Bianca, Emma, and I were able to choose a project idea near to each or our hearts. We wanted to build an inclusive garden that all of the students of a local elementary school could enjoy. We were able give the garden an aboriginal design; the garden had native plants, aboriginal artwork, and contained a friendship bench made from natural cedar logs.
By working together to building our heritage garden, I was really able to witness the diversity of skills and experiences a group of people can contribute. Each member was able to assist in his or her own personal way to build the garden. Through this personalization, we really felt pride in the garden. When we finished the project, seeing the student’s eyes light up as they explored the plants and first jumped onto the friendship bench I really felt that we had accomplished something important. I get the impression that these students really feel community when they can have this garden as their own. Seeing the thanks on the student’s faces make me believe this addition to their school grounds will have a positive and lasting effect for years. I really hope this beautiful garden will encourage the students to think inclusively and bring nature into all aspects of our outdoor spaces.
